Log this before you blog that: top 10 blog writing tips

Blog writing is an essential part of your content marketing mix. If you keep these top ten tips for writing a blog in mind, you will be creating relevant, visible blog content in no time.

1. Start thinking about your next blog post now - Post regularly. Content marketing is like a camp fire. You must feed your audience regular content just as you would a fire, with wood. Otherwise it will just burn out.

2. You’re a publisher - As a blogger, remember that you’re a publisher. When you post your article, you take up the role of author. Remember your experience, build quality into your post, keep it simple but engaging.

3. Your audience is the boss - Before you even begin writing you need a good idea of who you’re writing for. Build a profile of your reader but ask yourself what stage of the buying cycle are they at, who are they, and what do they want?

4. Write for humans, not search engines. But remember keywords - Focussing on your position in Google can sometimes leave you writing blog posts for computers and not people. That said, remember to include a few prominent keywords so that you can still be found.

5. It’s not just about words - Offer your readers more than just words. Engage with people; invite them into discussion to share ideas. Use it as an opportunity to learn more about your reader.

Create content with these five steps...

6. Create wings and roots - Create content that flies by making it shareable with your readers. Don’t lock in your content but, where possible, link back to other blogs.

7. Update, don’t recreate - Instead of creating multiple blog posts on the same topic, just update the original post with any new developments.

8. Reimagine content. Don’t recycle - There will be times when you’re going to want to blog and write about a topic that has already been written about.  Don’t be tempted to reuse existing content instead, come up with a new spin on it.

9. Share the world around you - Sometimes it can be difficult to come up with new content ideas. Other bloggers can be inspirational, but a good tip is to look at your surroundings. What’s actually going on around you?

10. Should you end with a question? - Like all social media tools, blogs allow people to speak in both directions. Engage with your reader by asking a question. Challenge them to respond and add their points to your list. Not only is this a great way to share ideas but it adds content to your blog post. Wouldn’t you agree?
